I grew up in a small town in Ohio, but Palm Springs is where I found home and where much of my story was written.
My journey has not always been easy. I experienced homelessness here in our community, and in my twenties, I learned I was living with HIV. Those experiences forced me to rebuild, reevaluate what mattered most, and decide what kind of life I wanted to create.
What I found in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley was more than a place to live. I found community, opportunity, and purpose.
That purpose led me into healthcare.
I began my career working directly with patients as a medical case manager, helping people navigate some of the most difficult and uncertain moments of their lives. Over the years, I continued to grow in healthcare leadership, taking on roles focused on community health, access to care, and improving how healthcare reaches the people who need it.
For more than a decade at DAP Health, I have had the privilege of working alongside patients, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and local leaders throughout our region. I started on the front lines and eventually grew into executive leadership, but I have never forgotten the lessons I learned sitting across the table from someone who simply needed help.
Healthcare is personal to me because I have experienced it from more than one side: as a patient, as someone who has faced difficult circumstances, as a frontline healthcare worker, and as a leader responsible for improving how care reaches our communities.
Palm Springs gave me the opportunity to rebuild my life, build a career, and become part of a community I care deeply about.
I believe in giving back to the place that gave me so much, and I believe leadership should always begin with listening, empathy, and a commitment to the people you serve.

The Desert Healthcare District is at a once-in-a-generation moment. With the resources created through the hospital lease purchase agreement, we have an extraordinary opportunity to shape healthcare in the Coachella Valley for decades to come.
I’m running for the Desert Healthcare District Board because I believe everyone in our valley deserves access to high-quality healthcare close to home. I also believe this moment calls for leaders who understand healthcare, who will listen to the people we serve, and who recognize the responsibility that comes with deciding how these significant community resources are invested.
Across our communities, families are waiting too long for appointments, healthcare professionals are stretched thin, costs continue to rise, and too many people still face barriers to getting the care they need. I have seen those challenges firsthand. I’ve also seen what is possible when we invest in the right solutions and put people at the center of our decisions.
For me, this is about more than managing resources. It is about using this once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen primary care, expand mental health services, address our healthcare workforce shortage, and make meaningful investments that improve health and access to care for generations to come.
My commitment to leadership also extends beyond my day-to-day work. I earned a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University and have served in leadership roles on local and national boards, including as president of a national board. Those experiences have strengthened my ability to bring people together, navigate complex decisions, build consensus, and understand the responsibility that comes with serving an organization and the community it represents.
That experience has taught me that improving healthcare requires more than good intentions. It requires listening to residents, working collaboratively, making thoughtful decisions, and ensuring public resources are invested responsibly and where they can have the greatest impact.
I’m running because I want to bring that experience to the Desert Healthcare District Board in Zone 1. My priorities are straightforward: improve access to care throughout the valley, strengthen and grow our healthcare workforce, support services that meet the real needs of our communities, and make sure taxpayer dollars are managed responsibly and transparently.
I also believe that where someone lives, how much they earn, their age, or the challenges they have faced should never determine whether they can receive quality healthcare.
If elected, I will bring the perspective of someone who has been a patient, worked directly with patients, led healthcare teams, served in board leadership, and helped strengthen healthcare access across our region. I will listen. I will ask questions. I will work collaboratively. And I will always remember that every decision made by the Desert Healthcare District ultimately affects real people and real families. That is the responsibility I am asking voters to entrust me with, and it is one I would be honored to take on.

C.J.'s commitment to community service extends beyond his professional healthcare work. His board and advisory experience spans healthcare access, mental health, homelessness, HIV advocacy, nonprofit leadership, higher education, and community engagement.

The Desert Healthcare District & Foundation is a local public agency serving communities throughout the Coachella Valley. It is governed by seven elected Directors, each representing a geographic zone within the District. Its mission is to improve health access and outcomes through strategic funding and partnerships that strengthen community health and resilience.
Zone 1 is one of seven geographic zones within the Desert Healthcare District and represents approximately 60,000 residents. It includes most of Palm Springs, almost all of Rancho Mirage, and small portions of Cathedral City and Palm Desert. The elected Director for Zone 1 helps shape decisions related to healthcare access, community partnerships, and long-term investments that support the health of our community.
I’m running for the Desert Healthcare District Board because I believe healthcare decisions should be guided by the needs of the people who live here.
The District plays an important role in improving access to care, strengthening community partnerships, and investing in programs that support better health outcomes throughout the Coachella Valley.
If elected to represent Zone 1, I will bring a community-focused approach to the Board, listen to residents, and work to ensure that public resources are used thoughtfully and responsibly.
For me, this campaign is about making sure our community has the care we need, where we live.
